Dust BunniesPsalms 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. Psalms 119:105 NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: When I was a kid, I sometimes liked to crawl under the bed, just because I could. One of the fun things about that was seeing all of the little fluffy pieces of dust on my clothes. We called them dust bunnies, though I'm not sure where the term came from. They didn't much resemble rabbits to me, but who was I to question the wisdom of the ages? I remember another thing from my childhood, a song called Dust on the Bible. The idea of the song was that the Bible in so many homes collects dust because the presumed Christians who live there never bother to open it. If you let dust accumulate long enough, bunnies thrive, and you know how rabbits multiply! The song is no less true today, unfortunately much more so with each passing year. David said he hid God's word in his heart. The only way to do that is to study the Bible. God's Word is our spiritual food, the very flesh of Christ; if we don't eat, we starve, and the same is true of our spirits. Scripture sets the limits which we are to live, as God's children. If we are ignorant of what it teaches, we sin in ignorance. The world sins because sin is its nature; Christians either sin deliberately, and presumptuously, or out of ignorance. We are without excuse either way. The only way we can live up to the standards that God sets for us is knowing what the standards are. Ours is an age of spiritual darkness. Sin is not only overlooked in our culture, it is glorified. Those of us who still have set standards are ridiculed as prudes, and vilified as bigots. The only light we have in the darkness is the light of the truth of God's Word/ It not only lights our surroundings, but shows the way ahead. If we expect to find direction and truth in the popular media, no matter their pretence of being scientific and infallible, we are doomed to be misguided and deceived. We can't pick and choose in God's Word. The Bible clearly makes the claim that all of it is inspired by God. It wasn't given to us to collect dust on the shelf, or the coffee table, but for our benefit. If we ignore it, or turn to it only occasionally and casually, we are robbing ourselves, and dishonoring God. Doctrine consists of what we believe, about God, his creation, his plan, and our place in his plan. Reproof means being chastened when we stray from the truth, and correction means being set back on the right path again. Instruction comes from the Holy Spirit, our teacher and counselor, and is available only to Christians who seek to know what can be only spiritually discerned. (1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.) Prayer and Bible study are the two pillars of our faith. Without them, we are weak, and easily led into error or rebellion. If dust bunnies form on our Bibles, it is not hard to imagine their accumulation in our minds, hearts, and spirits.
