Why Do We Say the Bible Is Infallible?

The Bible's Answers to Man's Questions

Key Verses:  Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

The short answer to the question is, "Because that's what the Bible says".  If the Bible has demonstrable errors, then it cannot all be inspired by God, who, by definition, is all-knowing.  Some people say that only certain parts of the Bible are in error, but not all of it.  They are then left with the decision as to which ones are inspired of God, and which ones are not.  At that, human judgment is substituted for divine judgment, because at the very least the statement in 2 Timothy, as given above, is wrong.

Skeptics and unbelievers have spent centuries trying to demonstrate mistakes in the Bible.  Time and again, they have been proven wrong; the classic case is the existence of a people called the Hittites, mentioned in the Bible, especially in Joshua.  So-called scholars of the nineteenth century insisted that the Bible must be in error, since no evidence of the Hittites had ever been found.  Since then, archaeological evidence has been found that proves their existence beyond any shadow of doubt.  Others said there was no evidence of the existence of Sodom and Gomorrah; recent excavations in the Dead Sea area not only shows that the cities existed, but that they were destroyed catastrophically by fire.  No doubt, that was because of a volcano, the skeptics say....

The Word of God is the bedrock of our faith.  Yes, our experience with God in our day to day walk is vitally important, and, yes, the indwelling Holy Spirit confirms our faith.  The Bible, though, is the concrete, visible manifestation of Christ, who called himself the "Word of God."  It forms and defines the basis of our faith and doctrine, and is the chief tool that the Holy Spirit uses in instructing us in God's truth from day to day.  If any part of it can be proven to be wrong, then we can rely on none of it.  Satan has always launched persistent attacks on scripture, trying to destroy all available copies of it from the days of the fallen kings of Judah, through the Bible-burning efforts of modern police states, to present attempts to pervert it through flawed and heretical interpretations.

The Bible is like the flesh of Christ, his body broken for our spiritual life and nourishment.  That is why the lack of the Word of God is described as a famine: Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:  Christ also referred to himself as the Bread of Life, and it is his Word that sustains us.  If we allow the world and the Devil to destroy the authority of God's Word for us, then the church will wither on the vine.
