Hymn Stories
The Stories Behind Old Fashioned Hymns
A B C D E F G H I J L M N O R S T W Y
Very often, it is not only our cherished hymns that are a source of inspiration to us, but the stories of how they came to be written as well. Some were composed in times of great personal crisis, such as severe illness, imminent danger, or the loss of loved ones. Like so much that we take for granted, many of the songs in our hymnals were purchased at great sacrifice and loss, or later brought men and women to Christ, or comforted others in their own crises. Not every song has a known story behind it, and and not every story is based in profound drama. Some of these accounts take up only a few lines, while other stories take up several paragraphs.
Unless otherwise noted, the materials used for these hymn stories come from the excellent repository of hymnology, the Cyber Hymnal, As I freely acknowledge, that site has been the source for much of what we share with you on this one, and I once more express my prayerful appreciation for all of the thousands of hours of dedicated effort that went into constructing the Cyber Hymnal. For a complete reference on the quotations shared in the various stories, especially Ira Sankey, one of the leading hymnologists of the nineteenth century, please check out the links in the corresponding lyrics files on the Cyber Hymnal. To the best of my knowledge and belief, all of the materials cited in these stories are in the public domain.
