Hebrew: nephesh appetite, lust, derived from the word for life or flesh ta'avah: a longing, a delight, a desire, a greedy lusting. sh@riyruwth: obstinate, as with imagination, lust. chamad covet, delight, desire, lust.
Greek: pathos: passion, faffection, lust. epithumia desire, lust, concupiscence. epithumia: longing, desire, lust.
Deuteronomy 5:21 Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.
Lust involving wanting something we should not have, especially something that rightfully belongs to someone else, and taking any shortcut to get it..
Psalms 10:3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth.
Those who are proud of their lust admire others who gratify their own lusts.
Psalms 78:18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust.
In this case, lust means appetite, as in an unhealthy appetite of the flesh for food, gluttony.
Psalms 78:30 They were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat was yet in their mouths, 31 The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel.
God's wrath was the response to lust, which came out of disobedience.
Psalms 81:12 So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels.
Lust comes out of stubborn disobedience to God, and following our own will.
Matthew 5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Lust comes from within us, directed toward something we are not supposed to have, and can be the moral equivalent of acting out of our lust, as in committing adultery.
Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
Lust comes from deliberate disobedience to what we know are God's requirements.
1 Corinthians 10:6 Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
The story of the lusting of the children of Israel in the wilderness after meat is our example of the price of lusting after what we want but should not have; the ultimate "wages" of lust, as with all sin, is death (Romans 6:23).
Galatians 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh .
The antidote for the lusts of the flesh is to walk in the control of the Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 4:3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; 5
Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
Sanctification, walking in holiness, involves abstaining from the lusts of the flesh, such as fornication, sex outside of marriage.
James 1:13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: 14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
God never tempts us to lust; that comes from ourselves. The end result of lust, through the sin it encourages, is death.
2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
The rampant corruption in the world comes through lust.
2 Peter 2:9 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: 10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
Those whose lifestyle is one of lust, of walking after the desires of the flesh, the natural man, are destined for God's judgment.
1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
The lusts we have come from three sources: through the desires of our physical bodies, what we see with our eyes, and what we want to satisfy our pride, placing ourselves and what we want first.
