What Must I Do?

By Gary W Cavendish

(2000)

If I could help you see the future days

By giving my own eyes

I’d give them both to you.

To see, perhaps, where danger lies,

And where the darkness falls.

If my feet would help you walk the path

That leads to happiness

I’d gladly end life halt and lame.

The only Way to lasting joy

Perhaps they’d follow then.

Two hands to serve, one mouth to speak

What must I surrender for you?

A broken heart, a pool of tears,

If they would help I’d make an offering. with

A lifetime’s lessons, dearly learned.

The hurt, the pain, I’d gladly keep.

Whether yours or mine.

The long-sought love I’d purchase with

Whatever fate requires

If I had the price to pay.

What must I do to win you back?

It seems I can do nothing but pray.

If I could restore the joy we shared

When you were my little girl –

But you’ll never be little again.
