DISCIPLESHIP By Donna Kupferschmidt August 22, 2007
I haven’t always been a Christian. Those who didn’t know me 3 years ago are amazed to find that out. By the grace of God, I’m now on fire for Jesus Christ. Two years ago, God sent people who walk in faith to help me out of the pit I was in: loneliness, shame, guilt, pain. I’d bought Satan’s lies by believing that my sin was too great for God’s forgiveness and that I had plenty of time to find God. My cousin, in particular, who was formerly known by me to be a Jesus Freak, reached out to me at just the right time, God’s perfect time, for me to accept God’s mercy, love, grace, and forgiveness. Some who knew me before I died on the cross with Jesus are confused and miss the old Donna. She’s dead. She’s not coming back. I thank God for that. “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain (Philippians 1:21).” She’s been replaced by a new creation, who was called by the grace of our loving and patient Father, bought by the precious blood of Jesus, empowered and fueled by the Holy Spirit. I’m saddened by and pray daily for those who miss the old Donna and want her back. “Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it (Luke 17:33).” I pray they find the same freedom, peace, joy, agape love, grace, and Truth I found through Jesus Christ as my Savior. I know my no longer wanting to participate in the old sinful ways confuses them. Before Christ, I thought Christians were too happy, too zealous, and too weird. I thought they couldn’t possibly be aware of what’s going on around them. Now that I’m a Christian, I see that’s not at all so. We see evil. We recognize evil. We see evil as a spiritual battle, not a battle between flesh and blood. We are very aware of, but no longer focus on evil; we focus on God and His glory. We are no longer jaded and throw up our hands in despair and defeat. We now have hope: hope through our Savior and King, Who defeated death and sin for us. Through Him, we can stand victorious. Through Him, we can sing and dance with JOY! Through Him, all things are possible. Through Him, we can move mountains…. with just a mustard seed of faith. “I can do everything through him who gives me strength (Philippians 4:13). Praise God! As a Christian, I am a disciple of Christ. As a disciple of Christ, I have a mission: to reach the lost, the hopeless, the jaded, the defeated, the ones who believe Satan’s lies as I did. As a disciple, I have a mission in the awareness that our time is short: to proclaim God’s goodness and love, to proclaim that no sin is too great for God’s forgiveness, to proclaim God’s personal nature of wanting fellowship with us, not because we deserve it, but because of His mercy and love, to proclaim God is REAL. My mission field isn’t in far away lands. My mission field is my immediate environment. I see so much misery and pain and hopelessness that only Jesus can cure. I see so much misinformation and outright lies propagated through modern technology that is also available for us to use for the Truth. I see the bondage of sin and the sorrow it brings. Dying on the cross and living through Jesus Christ, my Savior and King, has changed my focus. It’s no longer all about me and about my gratification, but it’s all about the Lord and doing His will for His glory. My testimony and my life story is not about me. It’s all about God and His glory and the freedom available to everyone through the blood of Jesus Christ. It’s not about me. “Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, praise him with the strings and flute, praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord (Psalm 150).” |
