THE QUILTING BEE
It is not an ordinary
quilt
Made at this quilting bee In fact, if you trace its being built You will discover the heart of a family
There is
no real beginning It began so long ago Like a circle with no ending It will forever grow
The quilt
has no set pattern
Each piece is unique you see If you study it you will learn It connects us all, you and me
You will
see the courage that it took
From our ancestors so long ago Its pieces like pages in a book Tells stories of happiness and woe
That worn and tattered piece there Was once a beautiful gown with lace Worn by the mother of a royal heir Loyalty to the Irish brought him disgrace On a slave
ship with his mother To America he was bound The sorrow like no other A whole
new life was found
Qualities like courage, faith and dignity Many pieces in this fine quilt were sewn Hope, love and liberty The mighty quilt well known
Those two
pieces woven together
Eleven pieces wound about A family first and forever Together will work things out
Some pieces may unravel The thread will weaken too With patience and love to mend it I
And when pieces are destroyed By ways we cannot foresee Their beauty remains unchanged Forever in our memory
T New pieces added every year And each in its way more beautiful And each piece is very dear
And when our days are ended And time shall be no more
More
wondrous than before
