While the World Gloats, Heaven Weeps

By Donna Kupferschmidt

December 5, 2006

Recently, we saw Mel Gibson splashed across the headlines for being arrested for drunk driving and for his anti-Semitic rants against the police officer who arrested him.  Pictures splashed in the tabloids with a pie-eyed Gibson, beer in each hand, babe on each arm.  How far the pious producer of  “The Passion of the Christ” had fallen!  As the world jeered, Heaven wept.

On October 13, 2006, the epic “One Night with the King” opened worldwide.  Heralded as the true depiction of the story of Esther, the Christian community looked forward to its release.  After the release, little was said and for good reason, as it was not a true depiction of the Book of Esther.  The movie was a love story between Esther and the king, not Esther and her God and her people.  The fantastic way she saved her people was lost in the movie.  As the world slept, Heaven wept.

Early December 2006, “The Nativity Story” opened, not without controversy.  The 16-year-old actress who plays the Virgin Mary is pregnant by her 19-year-old boyfriend.  As the world gloats, Heaven weeps.

Throughout my walk with Christ, I fall, I stumble, I stub my toe.  As the world watches for those missteps and sees them, Heaven weeps.

I know that I am a sinner in need of redemption through Christ, but the world only sees Law, not Gospel.  Cognizant of that, I try to focus on showing the world the greatest gift that God can give us and that is love.  I need to let Christ’s light shine through me so that the world sees that marvelous Light, blinding them to my human frailties.  God has blessed me with His presence, His love, His mercy and I want the world to have that relationship with Him also.

As Heaven smiles, pray for all the saints: that we may let Christ’s Light shine through us for the world to see.

“Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul.  Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us (1 Peter 2:11-12).”
