Prayer and Faith

The Christian family is under attack today as never before.  Many people live together without bothering to go through the formality of a marriage ceremony.  Homosexual relationships are treated as perfectly normal on mainstream media, while some states give the same legal status to the union of two men, or two women, as they do to a woman and a man.  Sexual promiscuity and premarital sex are the norm, rather than the exception, and drug addiction and alcoholism are at epidemic proportion.  It's illegal to condone prayer in school, and an elementary school boy can be sent to jail for witnessing about Jesus.  Those Christians who haven't compromised with the world are labeled as bigots, and and dangerous extremists.

With the Christian faith being removed or condemned in so much of public life, it is easy for us to lose our focus, and forget whose we are.  Below are a number of ways I believe we can stay strong in our faith, and maintain our witness.

  • Make certain we remain in fellowship with other Christians.  As the Bible says: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Hebrews 10:25.
  • Don't spend time doing anything you wouldn't do if Jesus were with you - because he is.  That includes watching R-rated movies, watching any TV shoe or movie with blatant sexual content, or gratuitous or gross violence.  Don't look for pornography, however mild, on the Internet or in bookstores.  Don't join your fortunes with unbelievers, or associate with them on any kind of social gathering featuring alcohol or "recreational" drugs.  2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
  • Along with the don'ts, some do's.  Do spend time with your family in the Word, watching suitable entertainment together, or doing something together you all enjoy, or at least that the children enjoy.  Do make a habit of spending time with the Lord every day, the more the better, in prayer and in meditating on the Word.  Read Christian books, and read Christian music.
  • When crises come, as they will, remember that we have an advocate, or attorney, in Jesus Christ (1 John 2:1).  In addition, besides your own family and circle of friends, you have a whole world of support and information available to you.  Never give way to despair.
